on occasion my 6 week son son will put his fist in his mouth if hiss paci falls out. Starting yesterday though i find him doing it as soon as i put him in his swing after nursing and it looks as if hes hungry. can the fist mean hes still hungry or just tired and trying to soothe himself?

Probably just for comfort since he only does it when his pacifier falls out. Sucking is a natural reflex for newborns and so they will usually look for something to put in their mouth for that purpose.

If you think he is still hungry try giving him a little more to eat...if he is not hungry he will probably not take it. But I'm really thinking it is more that he is looking for something to replace the pacifier when it falls out.

Good luck and congrats on the new baby.

Be Thankful your baby has found something he can do to sooth himself. Some babies don't and spend all their time screaming.
My girl has always sucked her fist and if shes hungry she does so very noisily. She has just now started to suck her two middle fingers to help her go to sleep.

Babies have a natural reflex to suck. It is also a way to get familiar with their body...that is why they put their feet in there mouths when they can. It could mean that the baby is hungry, but it can also be great comfort.

My newborn does the same thing. He does it mostly when he wants his binky (paci) since "sucking" is a natural behavior to soothe himself. I have tried to give him milk after he does it and he really never seems interested. You might try both, just in case.

Baby hands are yummy! Didn't you know that?

All kidding aside. It's most likely comforting for him. Infants have a very strong sucking reflex and they find it comforting to suck on things whether they are hungry or not.

niether, putting things in his mouth is your baby's way of getting exercise because really, how many things can he do while he just sits there all day? Babies get bored and need stimulation, like with older kids needing to play, and watch TV and chew gum, smoke cigarettes, play video games, whatever. It's a baby's way of movement, physical stimulation, to burn energy.
Also, putting things in his mouth are ways he gets to know his environment. By taste and texture he learns to determine differences between things in his world like spinach and shoe and cat and dad's knuckle and blanket. He's exploring.
Encourage him to try new things, safe things though, right and support his enthusiasm in what's around him.

Both. my sons loves to suckle when he is not even hungry. he does not like a pacifier so i am his comfort. he lveos for me to lay down with him and beastfeed even when he is not hungry. it is his comfort just as another child has a comfort blanket. my son is 8 weeks now, i do love the closeness that we have during that moment though

Could be a little of both. My son would do it when he was hungry but my daugter did it all the time. When you see it try nursing a little more(just to ease your mind) but if he refuses then you know it's just for comfort. try swadling him and see if that comforts him.
Hope this helps.
