Depends on the adapter and laptop. on the adapter there is an output voltage (19V 24V ect) this number must be correct for the laptop to wprk properly. There is also an output current rating (5A 10A ect) this must be equal or greater than that required by the laptop. Finally the connecter must match in size/shape. If all these are correct than the adapter may be used in many cases (some laptops have a special signal that comes from the adapter, without the signal the screen may be dim and the computer may be slow if it operates at all) but it is usually better to have the proper adapter,

Most laptop adaptors have unique connectors. This is done to prevent you from plugging the wrong adaptor into the laptop and damaging the system board and processor. So odds are that the adaptor from one laptop will not even fit in the plug for another.
For it to work, it would have to have the same connector, voltage, polarity, wattage, etc. As there are dozens of possible combinations, the odds of one adaptor working with another laptop are slim.
If you can find an adaptor with all the right specs, it would work. However if you plug in one that is wrong, you risk destroying the entire laptop. So unless you know what you are doing, it is not recommended.
