She showed me the sex organs but even so I could not work out if it was a boy or girl. Is it obvious if you are having a boy, what would I have seen if it was a girl. I now I won't find out until the birth but I'm just wondering if anyone could explain what I would of seen if it was a girl.

Okay ..I feel the need to defend technologists a bit :-)

First off , ultrasound technologists are the highest skilled in medical imaging , so the fact that we're "not equipped and just running a machine "as the previous post states is very untrue. Did you know that most OB/GYN's don't actually read or perform ultrasound, typically only Perinatologists read , most other ob/gyn's that have in office ultrasound are going simply from the technologists report which is generated at the end of the exam. it's sad , and not at all right , but true. In 2005 an independant study was done , asking 25 OBGYN's from each state to take the Registry exam in OB/GYN imaging. Out of 1250 physicains 23 passed. The ARDMS ( the certification board for ultrasound) is trying to fix this by passing measures that require any office with in house ultrasound to also have a Physician who has passed the ARDMS registry in OB/GYN. The docs are fighting this , which is understandable.

As for not finding out the gender ...unfortunately there ARE many states and hospitals that prohibit us from telling the gender of the baby , becasue that is considered 'diagnosing', and only physicians can diagnose . This has nothing to do with the ability of the technologist and everything to do with the legal department at the hospital where the tests was done . If the tech cant tell you gender , then they more than likely are not taking images of gender either , therefore going back and asking is also a waste of your time. they wont have it , or will have some excuse ready as set forth by their legal department . Contrary to popular belief it's not a parents 'right' to know gender , and not the hospitals obligation to tell. It;s the obligation of the hospital to perform an exam that would evaluate the fetus for any and all abnormlaities that could be harmful to fetal development or maternal health, and report said abnormalities to the odering physician. It's not right ....I agree , but unfortunately with as litigeous as society has become it's just hospital administration being nervous. And it's sad ...bacauee it's detracting from the bonding experience an ultrasound could and should be for families . That's where the 3D and 4D studios come in ....they do the ' fun ultrasounds" ....and I reccomend maybe seeing if there is one in your area. many do quick gender checks plus pictures for as little as 100 bucks.

You couldnt see anything between the legs of my little girl. But I doubt it'll be able for you to tell without some sort of training, even the experts get it wrong sometimes thats why some hospitals wont tell you. You could always have a private scan or a 3-d scan, they'd tell you!

Most hospitals won't tell you because there is a chance they could be wrong and they don't want to be sued...That happened with my third pregnancy, they wouldn't tell me the sex.... I knew I was having a boy because of the baby's heart rate... under 150 they say it's a boy and over 150 a girl....Good luck and Congratulations

I've never heard of a policy like that before. Its your baby and you have the right to know the sex!!! Call them and demand the sex of your baby to be told to you. Its hard to figure it out on your own with those pics so I would go back in and ask them to tell you. Good luck.

A girl looks like just a slit or line between the legs a boy obviously will have a round area with penis coming off of it.. your best bet is to look up ultrasould pictures of boy/girl views and compare. its easy once u know wat ur looking at. You can also find places such as expecting mom.. that do ultrasounds for pleasure and not for medical u have to have ur frist ultrasound by ur doctor u have and they will tell u the sex and record it for u on dvd/tape they even offer 4d ultrasounds but they are pricey.

I agree with CarlisleGirl, it could have been that the ultrasound technician was unable to tell you the sex of your baby. Most are not equipped with that information, she/he's just just running an ultrasound and forwarding the results to your OB.

I am not competent to tell you how to interpret the scan, but I think you could demand to know and have your request met. You may need to take it up a level, however. Persist. Ask to speak to the supervisor, and that supervisor, if necessary. But it's simpler just to ask your doctor.

Please know that technicians are not permitted to interpret any tests like this. For example, when you have an X-Ray or mammogram, they just send the report to the doc, who tells you the results.

Maybe because it was at the hospital. The hospitals where I live won't tell you either. They say that's not priority. Just with until you get an order from your OB.
