Try asking the player why he likes putting people down? Tell him that what he is doing is not kind, and it would be more impressive if he used his position of status to help people as opposed to making them feel badly.
There are many NFL players that are worth emulating, and they are the ones who treat people well, and contribute to society, as opposed to making others feel badly about themselves.

ignore him and/or spin his insults into a compliment. Nothing is more embarassing to someone than trying to insult them and then wind up having to explain it making them look foolish. just beat them at their game. If they play defense, you should be on offensive and dominate them. Over skill them/over power them and embarrass them for thinking that they are better. (Vice versa for offense to defense)
