Yes, and, no, it is the nature of the beast. Depression is a horrible illness which blinds the sufferer to the norm and suicide may appear to be the only logical solution to them

My mother committed suicide when I was 5. She was schizophrenic and suffered depression. I can't tell you if it was a selfish act as I have no idea of how she felt that day and the thoughts in her head as she went about killing herself. What I can say is that it forever changed my life and my fathers life. Beyond recognition, and not for the best either. This, some may say, is fate and the cards which we are dealt. It is a difficult thing to contend with and the worst aspect of it is that as I have grown, you wonder if you would ever do the same, that it would become a self fulfilling prophesy. This act, sublimely and quietly done one day many many years ago, when I knew nothing of the world, will accompany me to my grave, and even if I wanted to commit suicide myself I know I must not, if only to spare my children and those who love me the lasting agony and anguish that this act can deliver - for a lifetime.

No more and no less selfish than anyone else who commits suicide.
The problem when people ask these questions is that there is inevitably a knee-jerk reaction, and in this case it would be, "what about the poor children?".
However, not all mums are good 'uns.
There are also lots of different reasons that lead a person to commit suicide, some of which may be beyond their control. Its just not as clear cut to categorically say its selfish or not.

The act itself would be deemed selfish in a way that if a mother decides to commit suicide then she has left her children to fend for themselves. These children would be confused and bewildered and extremely upset especially if they are older and understand what has happened.Maybe the children would blame themselves. On the other hand a mother who is severly depressed may feel that the children are better off without them and cant see any other way out.Depression is a crippling mental illness.

Isn't all suicide a selfish act? The people they leave behind. Those that witness it. Those that have to pick up the pieces. My hubby is a fireman and the things he's seen is unreal.
And why do people do this in such bad ways sometimes? Surely a handful of pills would be a lot less traumatic for others involved. It is selfish, yes.
I remember a couple of years ago a woman tried to throw herself in front of an articulated lorry. He swerved to avoid her but she just followed him. The poor bloke was very traumatised. I don't understand at all.

No, anyone who commits suicide is in such a state of depression that nothing else is in the mind but the wish for death. There is no sense of responsibility or caring about anything else. If you are referring to your Mum, I'm so sorry you have to cope with such a dreadful trauma, if you are the Mum and are thinking along those lines SEE SOMEONE, don't suffer alone and think there's no other way out. There is always hope and we on this forum are here to listen and help.

Well, once she has commited the selfish act, she will be dead no and can no longer be considered to be anything other than that. People who consider suicide are usually very tormented or depressed people they need help whilst they are alive to cope with these feelings not to be denegrated when they have achieved oblivion.

I hope that you arent the mother in question. I feel that anyone who takes there own life is being selfish. The question of WHY? Burns at you for ever. I had a parent do it and I cant help but ask Did She not Love me enough? Did I cause her to do it? Why did I not see it coming? I might join her to find out why? Did she not know how it hurts me to think of that day when I found her? I cannot watch movies with guns and violence in them they just bring back too much pain. Please I beg you I care if you do it. So if you are thinking it read this message as if it were coming from your child. Please!!

It is kind of selfish..
Think about the children she would leave, think how the children would become rebels and ruin their lives and end up commiting suicide too..
It is pretty selfish though..

I think situations like this are very easy for us to judge looking from the outside but just remember suicide is a very serious subject and no one does it lightly! We should have understanding for ALL the people involved as they are ALL victims in one way or another! I think it is just a very sad subject that we should all try to educate ourselves a bit more about and stop judging people all the time! Stop blaming and start helping!
