Rats are very susceptible to respiratory infections! Mine never appeared to be ill except for the runny nose and sneezing. I recommend making an appointment with your Veterinarian ASAP. You do not want to wait around for the respiratory infection to go away,,,because it will not without antibiotics. Depending on your Vet, they might just prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic for you. You just mix it into their water DAILY. I probably treated mine 3 times within the 2 years that I had him. If you would like some useful rat website addy’s, please email me. I’d be glad to pass on to you!

If they're sneezing, there's something wrong with them!

Respiratory illnesses are extremely common in rats, characterized by sneezing or squeaky breathing. Once they have this problem I'm afraid it never really goes away, but flare-ups of it (like if they get stressed) need to be controlled to stop it getting worse.

Go to your vets. Antibiotic courses and mucolytics are available to keep the problem at bay otherwise it can develop into something nasty and really cause your rats to have difficulty breathing.

I'm all for taking them to the vet, you just never know, but at the same time check your litter and your bedding.
Are you using pine or cedar shavings for either?
Those are aromatic woods and can cause respiratory trouble in small animals.
Or are you using cat litter that is not dust free?
I'm not saying that that is what's causing your problem, but it's a possibility.
