Short answer -yes

Long answer - You need to match type (DDR DDR2 SDRAM etc) and speed (100, 266, 333,400, 553 Etc)

Type will make sure the pin configuration is correct, speed means that your computer RAM won't slow down (lowest speed in RAM dictates overall speed)

Check Dell's website for specs of the type of RAM used by your computer.

If you input your service tag number, it will tell you everything you want to know about your computer.

dewcoons said it right.

Dells are funky in that they have specific memory address requirements that standard memory deosn't have. This is different than ECC memory.

Get the recommended part number from Dell, then search for that part number at the major memory stores such as memory4less and the like. Don't get standard system memory and expect it to work - it may only use 1/2 of the memory.

I know this because I just had this issue with five 800mhz Dells that were upgraded with standard system memory and had headaches galore.

You can use any manufacturer's memory. To be sure you are getting the right memory, go to Dell and look up their part number for the amount of memory you want. Then go to any of the "memory sites" on the Internet and do a search on the Dell part number. It should list that companies replacement for the Dell memory.

You don' t have to use 'dell' branded memory, it does need to be the same type and speed (MHZ) and each 'pair' of sticks need to be of the same size.

IE if you have 4 slots, and 2 chips in there now, you can add either 1 or 2 more chips as long as each set of 2 are the same memory size (ie: 256mb, 512mb, 1024mb)

Dont buy Dell RAM it's far too expensive.go to http://www.crucial.com there you can do a scan of your computer and it will tell you what memory is there and it will make recommendations as to your upgrade.
