Hi Ash,

Once about three years ago, I was in a workshop of a casting director for CBS prime time. I'll never forget one of the things she told us that day. She said that if you want to be an actor, it's important to know your type. She went on to talk about the importance of knowing exactly what your strengths and weaknesses are as an actor, what kind of show, program, movie, sitcom, soap or whatever you would see yourself on.

Whenever you have the freedom to choose and it is a competition, you will want to choose something that will help you bring out your strengths as an actor and hide your weaknesses. In the long run in your career, you will need to improve on those weaknesses if you truely want to be a versatile actor. For the sake of this competion though, I would also say that you should consider theater vs. film as the last person said who responded to your question. In addition, depending on what your level of experience is, you might want to choose something that is close to what your type is. It could be easier.

Here's something else for you to consider. I don't know your level of skill, but if you can choose a part that would show range of emotion and I mean real, true, authentic emotion and you couple that with a part that is true to your type, I would say that you could hit bingo!

There are many different ways to answer this question. Listen to what others tell you and then decide.

One of the best people to help you decide should be your acting teacher. Ask him/her. Or ask someone else who really knows your work. One other consideration as to whom to ask would be someone who is really competent in a store like Drama Book Shop in NY. Many of them are experienced actors themselves, well-read and can offer some good advice if you get hold of the right person.

That's my two cents! Good luck!

It depends on what type of audition we're talking about here. If it's a theatre audition you're going to want to choose a monologue from a play and not a movie. There are books available with selections from plays for young women, etc. I wouldn't recommend the ones that are just invented monologues, but that's just my personal preference that the material be from an actual script.

The only time I can think that you may want to choose material from a film is when you're auditioning for an agent for theatrical (film & tv) representation. Even then, your theatre monologue may be fine.

When you're auditioning for a film or tv show, they provide you with sides (a portion of the script) so you do not usually bring your own material.

Watch movies and pick a scene you feel you can act well.

Go to plays. Expose yourself to the medium.

Pick the area in which you excel, drama, comedy, etc. Then find a scene you can play alone in that category.
