why dont' you try going to task manager and do an end process for "explorer" .. and then go to file->new task in task manager itself and type explorer .. this works sometimes and brings back the desktop and task bar...
PS .. to open task manager hit Ctrl+Alt+Del keys and click on task manager ...
If this don't work then u can reinstall windows over ur current installation and most of your settings will remain same including ur files, but you have to choose repair or reinstall in the installation options .. and not new/clean install..

If you can get to the control panel, try going to the User icon and creating a new account (with admin rights, not limited).
Log in to the computer with that new account, and you should have the taskbar and icons for that account. In the Start menu go to Accessories > System Tools > SystemRestore and try doing a system restore to a date before the taskbar disappeared.
Reboot with the normal ID and hopefully you will be back in business. Then you may delete the new account you created to save hard drive space.

Hello, I think you are not patience enough for the computer, but nonetheless, before anything restart your system and see if it give the option to select recent working properly ........ use that and see what happen.
If you need to copy your file you can use DOS to copy file or insert Windows CD to repairs if there some operating file that are damage.
I hope these will solve your problem.
