I would start a visit to his family doctor - trying to pick which specialist to see without having him examined would be tough (as someone as answered, it could be many things).

That being said - I've worked in neurosurgery for 20 years and based on what you've described and his age, it sounds like a narrowing of the spinal canal that is called "Spinal Stenosis". This is a common condition that causes the type of pain you describe. (Often hurts more with walking, but not so badly if they walk leaning forward, like leaning on a shopping cart -- Sound like your Dad's symptoms?)

Below is a link to patient info from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, a respected organization that describes the symptoms more fully, how it is diagnosed and some treatment options.

Hope this helps - Good luck to your Dad!

Only a doctor can give him the proper test for this. I have been through the mill on that, from cardiopulmonary, to back. Since I have severe back problems it was diagnosed as nerve damage to the spinal nerves. I've been on a drug called "Reqip" but, it's of little good for me.
Take him to a good doctor to start with.

Make an appointment with his Family Doctor and/or a Specialist - Orthopedic for a complete evaluation! Could be nothing OR something very serious!
