If you are doing a clean install then don't worry about wiping out your harddrive. During the installation process Windows will give you an option to remove the partition, create a new partition then format it with NTFS before it installs the new operating system. This wipes out the harddrive before installing the new operating system.

Have your computer boot up using your Windows XP CD, and when it asks if you want to boot with CD, press a key. There it will give you options as to what you want to do. Reformat your C drive, and then install XP.
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm
This website explains it pretty well.

When you boot to the Windows CD it will give you the opportunity to delete the existing partition on your hard drive, by deleting the partition you will delete everything in it so you have your clean install.

"so i'm compelled to apply a disc that got here with my previous laptop." do no longer you advise you should to apply the single that did no longer comprise the laptop? i'm at a loss for words - i presumed that the disc that got here with the device wasn't readible. Is your CDchronic working? Assuming it reads DVD besides. Yu wipre your HD by using installation the OS, straightforward as that. be helpful that it is the alternative because of the fact getting your pc back to conventional after a reinstall may well be a time-eating soreness.

G'Day
Insert your XP install disk and let it run.
When it tells you that it has found an existing operating system and do you want to leave the file system intact or format it, choose Full NTFS Format.

Sorry, but if you are asking this question, you might not know enough about computers to do this by yourself without messing up. Read up on it beforehand or get someone else to do it.
