I cannot get any audio out of Final cut express. The clips are fine as audio plays with Imovie. I cannot find anywhere to turn the audio on. Can anyone help please?

Use the "View" menu; at the bottom is "Video". Under this (in FCE2) you can choose "Real-Time" or "Firewire". Choosing "Realtime" will allow audio to be heard.
I think later editions of FCE may have additional or other choices.
