1. By closing all unnecessary programs while recording. Make sure to check the System tray icons as well, and kill all the regular crap that is present there.

2. Do not run on battery, you never know when it will die.

3. Read Audacity help for details on the best bitrate, on the codec to save your file with, on general settings.

And anyway, expect non-professional quality from a laptop in general.

EDIT:
A no brainer: If you want to record from microphone, keep the mike far from the computer.
