i assume you mean a brown coconut, instead of a young green coconut (that has a jelly like substance inside)
generally, they have two or three ..indents in them. they look like holes that were started, but not finished.
what i actually do is i sit on the floor and hold the coconut with my feet, and i take a two foot screw driver and a hammer, and place the driver into an indent, and give the end one solid hit. the screwdriver will go in a little bit, and you just need to open it a bit with the end that got inside the coconut. at that point, you can drain the fruit easily.
if you mean to get the hard, white shell inside (the hard remains of the jelly as the milk seperated) then after you have drained, take that screwdriver that you've turned into a chisel, and make a few solid hits along the side (generally, there is a half indented line that runs across the fruit, put there by the pickers/finders/ shippers) or you can simply give it a few good wacks with a sharp knife
machetes are the actual knives that are used on them down in the tropics

First you need to drain the coconut water by piercing the three soft spots, which are called ‘eyes’, at the stalk end of the coconut. Use a screwdriver. When the holes are made, drain the liquid. Then crack open the nut by tapping it with a hammer.
Slowly turn the coconut as you hammer it. Look for the natural faultline; it will make your tapping easier.
The fault-line is about one third of the way down from the eyes. After you split open the nut, use the knife to lift out the meat.
How do you choose a coconut?
Are all brown and fuzzy ones ripe? A ripe coconut should feel heavy and if you hear a splashing sound while shaking it, it’s ripe. If it sounds dry and empty it probably has a crack or leak. Also, you need to select the dark brown shells. If a coconut has a light brown shell it isn’t mature and the cream will not be very rich.
The inside of the coconut needs to be thick and white, this will be best for making coconut milk or cream. If it has turned yellow it is rancid.

Use a screwdriver or knife to open one of the eyes to drain the liquid.
Take the back of a heavy chef's knife, and firmly tap around the circumference of the coconut, maybe two or three times for insurance.
Then give the coconut a good hard smack with the back of the knife, and it should break open in two perfect halves.
If not, put it in a gallon size freezer bag and take a hammer to it.

Drill/poke a couple holes to empty the milk. Bake the whole coconut in a 325 degree oven for an hour. This helps to separate the flesh from the shell. Crack/split the shell open any way you can. The flesh should easily come away from the shell.

Here is a good way what u do first is you take any knife make a small hole in the "eyes" then put a straw in to drink the milk then after that two ways since now its hollow with no milk you dont have to be as careful. 1. you take the coconut and a hammer and u hit it or to make it a cleaner slice you take a kitchen knife and you just with all your force (do this outside) hit the coconut it should split in half thats the way i do it

If you wet the coconut (just put a wet line of water at the center). Then just hit it on the concrete. The wet line will crack the coconut easily and equally. Just remember to ave a glass ready for the fresh coconut water. Also to remove the coconut fruit use a spoon and pry the edges till pieces come out.

Make an opening in the outer shell either with an axe or something sharp then peel the remainder off with your hands. You'll then see three closed holes on the inner shell , pierce these with something sharp and small enough to fit eg nail. This enables you to empty the juice before cracking open the inner coconut shell with a hammer.

It's very simple and fast: with a sharp scissor make a hole in one of the three "eyes" (only one is soft enough to) and pour the juice in a big glass. Then put your coconut into a strong plastic bag (no chips around) and beat it on the outside pavement (or a pavement hard enough not to damage it); it's easier if you find an angle. Ciao!!

use a cork screw drill a hole at each end lay it on flat surface
hit moderately with a mallet and a crack with result from one drilled end to the other. Sometimes you have to hit both sides. If it doesn't work for you then you didn't drill in far enough. Some tough coconuts you might have to use an actual drill! Well anyhow I told you what works for me!
