Why is it called a pancake when it is neither shaped like a pan or a cake?

In reality, though, pine cones were once called pineapples. Whenever the fruit we currently call "pineapples" was originally discovered in what is now Central America, they were called pineapples due to their resemblance to actual pine cones from conifer trees.
