I have run into a marital situation that has paralyzed my financially cut off. I rescue as many dogs as I can and thanks to the contributions of a new rescue, my responsiblity of ten dogs doubled. All of this is happening at the exact time of year when they are all due for shots, wormer, frontline, heartguard, etc. Not to mention the special care that required a financial commitment before the new pups,.... A Doberman blinded by Diabetes and needs insulin twice a day....an elderlyn Border Collie/Dalmation mix that has a weight problem which contributes to his arthritis pain,....a Chow mix that suffers from periodic seizures, ....a St. Bernard/ mix that has a severe skin condition that I am constantly having tested to locate the cause., but meanwhile has to take steroids and medicateed baths. etc....
With a total of 20 dogs that need vaccinations, wormed, frontline and heartguard, is there any suggestions that might be able to help me without resorti

i think you have to retain a licence for purchasing and administering vetinary medication, some animal drugs
are instantly fatal to humans and other animals, training to be a vet is harder than becoming a doctor because of the vast amount of animal types that there are,a doctor has only 3 types to learn about man woman and child.

im a bit confused did this rescue give you more dogs, and if so why are they not helping you with these things? I have always rescued dogs and have been giving shots myself for the past 15 yrs. I order them from a company called vet vax(the same place my vet orders his from.). I also get prescriptions from my vet for meds needed on a daily basis and order then from their as well. You can use the frontline spray its less exspensive and you can do more animals with it, injectable ivamectin (do not use on any type of collie or collie mix) can be given oraly at a rate of .05 cc per 5 lbs of body weight for heartworm preventative (with 20 dogs one bottle should last approx 6 months or more). safeguard liquid suspention can be use for puppy at a rate of 1/2 cc per 5 lbs of body weight for 3 days (this takes care of hook, round, whip , and tapeworms). Your one dog that has skin problems you can put on a wheat, corn and gluton free diet its a little pricy but its will cut down on the vet bills some. thats all we feed the dogs we have that have demadectic mange and epilepsy. You can treat demadectic mange with a dip called Atroban used at the rate of 1tsp per 1\2 gallon of water, dip once then again in 2 weeks Its pretty potent stuff so make sure you wear gloves but it work. And look for rabies clinics in your area alot of places have them the first or sec week of every month and they usually charge 1 or 2 dollars less then the vet. All of this stuff is what my vet has advised me to use so im not giving you anything I havent used by a vets advice.

You shouldn't be rescuing that many dogs if you can't afford it. The old ones with multiple problems, unfortunately need your loving care and let them go over the rainbow bridge. As for doing vaccines yourself, yes you can. Try a tack and feed store or Dr's Foster and Smith online. There should also be low cost vaccines clinics at Petco or at the shelter. Get some help from the ASPCA also.

I agree that you should limit the number of dogs you can actually care for but I understand your desire to help. If not you, then who will right? Anyhoo, you can get some vaccines through local feed stores or online at Fosters & Smith but you have to know exactly how to give them. They do come with pamplets on how and where to give the dose but when it comes right down to it, you really need to know how to give a shot, where to give a shot and you'll definitely need help with holding them down. There's a distinct difference between giving a shot IM (in the muscle) versus subq (just under the skin) and you need to know before you go a pokin! You can usually find, distemper, parvo and wormers to do yourself but rabies will have to be given by a license vet--sorry no getting around that one. The shots are cheaper if you buy them yourself but theres a lot of added risk if you don't know what your doing. Be especially careful with dosage of wormers. I have know people who've killed their whole kennels just by mistaking the dosage on self wormers.

DO NOT get them from a feed store. The refrigeration of the products at feed stores is often inadequate. You should be able to get them from your vet and be shown the correct way to administer them. From the sounds of it you are a frequent client and should have a good enough relationship with your vet to do that. Rabies however MUST be given by the vet. Talk with your vet about ways you might be able to cut down on your bill without influencing the care of your animals.

No, I'm afraid not.

Vaccines are drugs, and should not be supplied to people who aren't professionals. I hear that breeders do their own vaccinations and this really bothers me - I mean where the hell are they getting them from?

Phone around vets, many will do discounts for people with lots of dogs i.e breeders and rescuers.

I hope to God no one suggests getting them off the internet, you don't know what the hell you're getting if you do this.

Is there not a charitable organization nearby where you can register and get your medication and treatment for free?
