If their ideas and thoughts are based on science, wouldn't men want to "spread their seed" and not want to settle with one person? What is love mean to them anyway? It just really is a thought process..

I cannot choose a "best answer" as of yet but Bill K answered the question like it is and without feeling insecure to want to insult me. Let's face it-all love is a chemical reaction in the brain to all of you atheists. I guess you can also say tax breaks are pretty good reason to get married-no one has answered why under the laws of science we should get married. Let's all be honest-or is there such thing as "fair weather" atheists?

You don't have to believe in God to love someone.

Well, Atheists do not base every single thought and idea on science - that is like saying Christians have no thought or idea or action that was not in the Bible - ignorant!

I am an Atheist and happily married - my husband and I are best friends, great lovers and partners in life. This has nothing to do with religion. If marriage was only for Christians, why do so many Christians forsake their vows and have affairs or get divorced?

Okay you're making a number of unfounded assumptions that are all over the board there..

first of all just because someone is an atheist doesn't mean they're ideology is based on science, and vice versa for Christians or any religion for that matter

Secondly you're making the assumption that marriage and love is strictly a religious union, and that's just dumb. The need for affection, intimacy, and a connection with someone else is human nature, which transcends Christian traditions of marriage.

Well when you leave the religious part of a marriage out you still have to deal with the civil marriage and even religious leaders from priests to Imams or rabiis must preform the civil ceremony by law.

An atheist is no exception; his own secular state says if he is just shagging a girl but lets her live with him for a certain time period, or vice versa; he has a contract not in the eyes of not God but the law and the state and alimony or child support he or she shall pay! In other words they state wants a couple to take responsibility and pay the piper one way or another and does not seem to encourage the concept of mutual masturbation.

Actually, monogamy isn't an inherent trait to humans. It's learned.

That said, financial pressures necessitate marriage. The state usually deems the spouse the sole heir in the cases of a person dying with no will. In order to provide health benefits for someone you're in a relationship with, you usually need to be married. These are just a few examples.

Love itself, is nothing more than a chemical reaction in the brain. It's a wonderful feeling, but in all honesty, it's nothing more than the same chemicals that are released by eating chocolate, having sex, or doing heroin. The chemical response is just one of the mechanisms used to assure procreation, and propagation of the species.

Personally, I don't believe there is anything to be gained by being married.

I can fall in love without being married.
I can have children with my partner without being married.
I can buy a home and live together without getting married.
I can grow old with my mate... you get the picture.

The only positive to getting married is the tax breaks and medical insurance.

And divorce sucks for a guy, too.. if you're married.

Well, there are serveral tax benefits to be married. I can't speak for the atheists, but having children is not just a religious concept. Atheists do not believe in a deity. They don't believe in God but that doesn't mean they don't think it's right to be with one person and be faithful.

They may not believe in religion, but I'm sure some have morals.

I'm an atheist, but I want to get married when I fall in love. Just because my thoughts are focused on science, that doesn't mean I can't marry. Also, many atheists that I know want to limit population growth so we don't overcrowd the planet. No offense, but the "spread your seed" thing makes me think of Mormons. (Please don't kill me for saying that)

JonD is clueless.

My husband and I got married for two reasons:

legality and love.

We did not get married in the "Christian way"... we got married in a courthouse by a judge. The word God was not uttered once in the ceremony, which lasted all of 5 minutes. Paperwork was signed and we got on with our lives.

Not all athiests have their ideas and thoughts based on science. There are many spiritual athiests, just not religious. Besides, marriage is a cultural thing, not just a religious thing. It's like many people celebrate Christmas, but aren't Christian, it's just a cultural thing.

Marriage is a secular, civil process to provide legal access to all belongings between two people. Marriage was originally performed for money... the wife's family would trade her for goods and services from the man who wanted her. There's your religious foundation. Bah.
