They're close enough you won't have a problem. Download speeds should be the same on both

Watching DVDs requires a DVD capable drive. The old PC may not have one.

Gaming is a whole other issue. The old PC may not be able to play high-end games, but should be fine for games an 8 year old might play. 256MB of RAM will likely be required.

Xp and 2000 are virtually the same OS, but when buying a used computer especially one that's running 2000 is around 5-7 years old, anything more than $50 for it is a waste of money
considering you can pick up a new package with monitor, for around $500-$600 that would be perfect for and 8 year old. And one that he will be able to use for the next 2-4 years. plus be under warranty. hope that helps
