It depends on the context, Jessy. Amongst soldiers, if one of us falls; "He knew the risks." We say that amongst ourselves because the mission must go on. We tell our families that to relieve them before we go. Those that have been in the situation we live are granted reason to say and understand.
When an uncaring ungrateful civilian undermining our mission make a similiar statement, it takes a totally different connotation. When our lives and losses are being used politically to undermine our mission and our ability to protect by those that have never been there, it can cause anger.

It comes back to religion and "free will". I am a Vet and I joined to serve my country. I was let out on a disability and even today if I could would join and go back and fight for my country. This is not an anti bush question or a question of if we should or should not go to war. We, as service members, join the service to support our country. The country that gives everyone a free will to speak their mind weather right or wrong and the ability to agree or disagree with anything.
Just remember to always support your troops and always respect those Vets...as they gave you these freedoms. Because they were willing to enlist on their own and they were willing to put their life on the line for the American Way without regard of your political affiliation or weather or not you deserve the freedoms of American

It is not excused easily, This is just the way UN-Patriotic people deal with the fact they really don't have a clue why we join the military. To Service members, Veterans we understand and know that this statement is just a facade to cover up feelings, that person can not or will not understand.
Please Support Our Troops and Civilian Contractors

Because we put our life's on the line for you. We know that it won't always be in a noble cause (when I joined up it was to keep the USSR at arms length), but it will be important to our country.
We chose this possibility for the expressed purpose of defending the rest of "US". That extends to the 60's (the military is evil) crowd, and everyone else. We do this so you are safe in your life and constitutional rights.
It sometimes sucks (especially when we can't see a compelling national interest, like in Haiti), but it's what we signed up for.

Whoever say such a thing is an insensitive, uncaring person, each one of our fallen troops has left a void in their families that can never be filled and to us a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. They are heros precisely because they join voluntarily.God bless each and everyone of them.

It doesn't "excuse" their deaths, but it's true. They made a choice to join up, and it's a noble choice. However, with our choices in life, there are always risks, and we are the only ones who can make those choices for our own lives.
I don't know why you assume anyone is excusing anything away.

First, no one is excusing or trying to make an excuse for anything except you. Second the loss of one life in any conflict/war is awful. On the other hand the brave individuals fighting there now are doing it because the ywant to. I really suggest you think about what you say before you say it.

Well, No draft....No one forced them to go into the military....They (Men and women) know what is going on in the world but they join anyway. That's why there is no mass outrage.

I don't view it as being excused, that is more of a defensive statement to those who try to say they were sent against their will, or forced to die.
I feel it every time I hear it... and just thank God it isn't my husband.
c'mon... who *isn't* glad its not theirs... nothing heartless about that statement, just truth!

Because most conservatives are mean spirited, hateful, uneducated, detached, narcissistic people who are incapable of empathy for other human beings. They do not care about the death and pain their actions, the actions of their leaders create.
Where you or I will take into consideration the consequences of our actions, conservatives only care about whether or not they "win". The "win" being when they get a government as hateful and mean as they are. Once that government is in it can do no wrong in their eyes.
A soldier dies for a thousand lies...........
Is the conservative outraged at the death creating lies ?
No !
The conservative is outraged at the thought of ending the meaningless carnage.
"It's a volunteer army you know".
"Soldiers die in combat"
"They knew what they signed up for"
"We must finish our mission"
"We can't cut-and-run"
"Liberals hate America"
And some fence sitting sheep actually have the nerve to ask why liberals and conservatives "can't get along".
