I see the xp logo start up but then it just turns off by itself, i have it open and all the cables are fine...what do i check for ??

You don't explain what you were doing on the computer the last time you were able to log in, without your pc shutting down. (You may have a virus).
1) have you tried to turn on your pc in "safe mode", press on F8 key over and over until the screen open in "safe mode". You can try with your mouse to load your program from the last good startup, or in a safe mode. Then run an antivirus scan to see if you have a virus in the safe mode. (The screen will look very strange in "safe mode", normal, so don't worry.).
2) Some times, the problem will clear up if you unplug all your cables an re-plug back into your pc.
3) This can happen if your pc has over heated. Check your fan or fans.

You need to use the recovery discs. (that you hopefully made)
My computer did the same thing it was caught in some kind of loop. I t woul startup get top the windows screen then shutdown and boot up again. Your computeris most likely doing the same thing. I hope you backed up your files cuzz your about to lose them.

make sure the fans are running in the computer so it gets cooled
happed to my cousin which the fan wasn't running and we replaced it
