There are two main diseases that can effect the thyroid gland. These diseases often run in families and among women. Hypothyroidism - under active thyroid - so the gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism - over active thyroid - so the gland is producing too much thyroid hormone. In both cases drugs are used. Hypo is easier to treat as patients take hormone supplement (animal derived or synthetic, or combo). Hyper is harder as they need to slow down the over production which can be done by radiation as the other contributor mentioned it. Unfortunately today medicine is not sophisticated enough to slow down the overactive thyroid, because it usually results in complete destroy of the thyroid gland. Then Hyper patients become Hypos and rely on medicine. There are many things your sister and mom can do to live well with thyroid disease and there are LOTS of information about this on the web. A good diet, supplements (vitamins, minerals), lots of sleep, cardio exercise, minimized stress in surroindings, can all play a role in managing the thyroid diseases. Hypos get prescribed synthetic thyroid hormone (T4) or T3 hormones or combo. Also some feel better on animal (pork) derived medicine which contain all T4, T3, T2 and T1 hormones. It is recommended that hypos consume minimal goitrogens (certain group of veggies) and soy, coffee, sugar, and more of fresh veggies, fruits (apples, apricots), nuts, lean meat, vitamin A containig foods like fish, eggs, organic dairy. There are tons of stuff on the net about this. Check out about.thyroid.com for more info. Also, since it runs in the family all of you should be checked (you inculded) for thyroid functions. Check that website also for what to test for! I wish you and your family good health and good luck!

I think you are talking about hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, and hyperthyroidism and overactive thyroid. There are many causes of the disease, malnutrition as a cause is rare. It may be hereditary, women seems to get it more. Also sometimes auto-immune diseases play a role.
If your thyroid is underactive you are given thyroid hormones daily to make up for what you are not producing.
If your thyroid is overactive, medication can be given to slow it down. In certain cases radiation can be used to kill the thyroid, or part or all can be removed.
