Nikon is one of the premiere Japanese camera makers and they are noted for top quality. You need to consider what you want the camera for, how well it fits your needs, how much it costs compared with how much you can afford, and you can probably go to any website and look at a range of their products and see what best suits you.
If you are buying a new camera you will probably pay quite a bit for a Nikon.
So you need to shop around. There are many other excellent Japanese cameras and some made in other countries as well. You might want to look at Canon, Yashica, Mamiya and others.
Nikon is best known for its 35 mm cameras, but has also made digital cameras and as far as I know the quality upholds the reputation of the camera builder.
Again, my best advice is to shop around. See what you like. If you like the Nikon and you get it for a good price you are getting a good buy.

I've lost my faith in Nikon compact cameras, which is a pity. Not that they're completely flawwed, but flawwed enough to cause reconsiderations. Mostly Nikon compacts are slow, and image quality is degrading on certain models (albeit not too badly). One camera that I have yet to see seriously reviewed is the S500, it looks promising on paper, and I hope it doesn't dissapoint.
However, Nikon DSLR's are very good. And of course, there are some aspects of their DSLR's that don't match Canon's such as sensor technology, but it is better Canon in other aspects such as build quality and menu systems.

In what price bracket? What general class of camera?
Nikon has cameras from under $200 to over $2,000. WELL over $2,000.
Some models are good and some are not the best choice, but it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to do with the camera.

The answer comes from your needs. Nikon is always noted for it's high quality items, film cameras, digital cameras and also medical/space optics. What are you buying the camera for? Normal daily family shots or commercial advertisements. There lies your answer.
