And what do you do in a self-dedication?

To reiterate what the enlightened people have said so far, it depends on what _You_ wish to do. If you are solitary you can do whatever you wish! If it is standing outside under a full moon invoking each element and declaring your dedication - then So It Is!

It depends. Some Witchcraft traditions have no dedication requirements, some do. Some Wicca covens think that you can only become a witch if you are dedicated and initiated by another witch. Some covens don't care. Some prefer to do it themselves.

Some people believe self dedication is fine, some look down up on it, some don't feel it's necessary at all.

Search the internet and read many books to figure out which way is right for you. Once you find one that you like, then you can research that particular tradition's ways of doing dedications and initiations.

Well I did a self-dedication. I don't really have an answer I just wanted to let you know how my week-end went.

We got to Trothmoot Thursday afternoon. There were people there from Canada, California, Mo., Tenn., Ky., all over. It was a beautiful park. I learned a lot about the Norse tradition. I also had a kind of a visitation from Thor and the Morrigan. I spent WAY too much money but, I got two beautiful dresses, one of which was given too me by a wonderful Norse witch I met, and some really pretty handmade sun-catchers. The main chunk of change was an amber necklace and Thor's hammer with a pentacle carved into it.

The spiritual power of the place was overwhelming. I think they said they've been there 12 years. If we get the chance, we're going to try to go back next year with my son.

In traditional witchcraft and in Wicca alike...there is an initiation involved...it all depends upon whether you choose to be a part of a coven or choose the solitary path...there are several different ways to do this and if you are solitaire, it is a purely personal decision on how this is to be done. You can find alot of good suggestions in different publications such as Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft, The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner....the list goes on.
Find what feels right for you and go with it. To thine own self be true....please remember...while ritual is very important to some...it is true intent and personal integrity that is important to the Goddess!
May you find the path you seek that brings you fulfillment.
Bless You in your Journey!
Blessed Be!

The beautiful thing about the craft is, there are no rules. If you want to do a self dedication ritual, you can. Some covens may require you to go through an initiation ritual, but if you are solitaire, it's all up to you.

The only correct answers are the ones saying it depends on your tradition of Witchcraft.

Bening a High Pristess myself, my coven, looks down upon it.
But that is only us. Like the above posts it all depends on the coven/tradition.

Take your time and read as much as you can.

If your talking traditional as in hereditary, I think they just start teaching you when you are ready to learn. If you are not hereditary, and trying to get into traditional, it depends on the tradition, or family, who's practice you'd like to learn

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD -Deuteronomy 18:10
