He may feel like dying, but he won't. As nasty as opiates are, the withdrawals can't kill you, so if he's refusing to go to a hospital, his only other option is detox at a treatment center, or using again. Is he choosing to get clean and this is why he's withdrawaling? If this is the case, good luck, and I'd suggest getting him into residential treatment asap b/c even if he makes it through the the withdrawals, in a couple weeks there's an extremely high probability he'll relapse. I'm an addictions counselor for teens, so I'd like to think I know what I'm suggesting here. Good luck.

You are very wrong about withdrawal of methadone not killing you. There are numerous cases all over the internet. Just search it! I've been taking 40mg for chronic pain for over 12 years. It's not fun and not to be taken likely. People should get help getting off of it and not try to cold turkey alone. There are also drugs (Suboxone) and others that are supposed to help, but have to be taken under strict schedule and timing to be effective. I've spoken with many people about withdrawal, doctors and drug addicts. One person who had been through both Heroine and Methadone withdrawals said the Methadone was many times worse. I've had beginning stages of withdrawals and it feels like large bugs or rodents are crawling inside you. You sweat profusely, cannot regulate body temperature, vomit wildly, it's not pretty and is complete torture for the person doing it, if they don't get help. Good luck and may God be with whoever is having to do this.

You need to put yourself first. Are you in a safe position? I've worked with people in withdrawal who have gotten violent. If your health is in danger, call the police. If his health is in danger, he needs to go to the hospital. You can't shove the pill down his throat, but he isn't in the correct state of mind to decide whether or not he should be seen by somebody.
