Maybe a stupid question, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time going to the gym every day.

Depends on your workout. If you do the same workout every day, your muscles don't have a chance to get stronger. If you vary your workout - upper body one day, lower body the next day for example - you get better results b/c you are not overstressing your muscles. The exception to this, I've heard, is that abs can be worked every day but I can't swear to this myself. If you aren't weightlifting, but concentrating on aerobics, then low-impact aerobic workouts can be done daily as long as you stay hydrated.

No, I think they mean lifting weights every other day. It is because your body needs time to rest in between sucessions. I suggest having cardio workouts at least five to six days a week and to lift weights six days a week, having one rest day. Start off on Monday by doing an upper body workout working your arms, chest, etc. Then on Tuesday rotate and do a lower body workout, working the legs, butt, and thighs and just keep rotating days. But, daily workouts are effective you just have to keep up the work and do not listen to what everyone else is saying. Good Luck.

It all depends on what kind of workouts you're doing. If you're maxing out every day then that's bad. You're pushing your body too hard and you need to give your body time to respond. What I would suggest is do cardio 20-30 mins about 2-3 times a week and mix in some weight sessions. If you're looking to gain mass then do light reps with more heavy weight. If you're looking to lean out then do higher reps with less weight. Back to the point though, I don't think you need to work out every day. I would say take weekends off or at least 1-2 days a week. See how you respond and research, research, research. Cheers!

cardio is good 4-6 times a week - body needs one day a week for resting
weight training - 3-4 days a week is enough and work on the same muscle group 2 days in a row
never spend more than 2 hours in the gym

The main issue there is don't work out the same muscle every day. Muscle needs time to recuperate. Usually about 48 hours.
So don't work biceps every day for example. You can still go to the gym and work other muscles though. Like biceps one day and triceps the next.
