Frank -- so, if it is a joint custody situation, where both parents are as actively involved as their parenting agreement will allow, can either call themselves a 'single mom' or 'single dad'?

no. the father doesn't necessarily remain single, as you've noted, but also he could father children from multiple single moms.

and to tell you the truth, when I think of a "single" mom or dad, that means she/he is raising kids alone...which would make the other person just "single", unless they are in a relationship with someone else. technically, they are biological parents because they provide the genetic material but they don't do any "parenting" otherwise.

I think that 'single' part needs to be removed from parenting.

I also think people need to take more time to build a relationship and they need to take more time trying to make it work.
