The general consensus among biochemists and nutritionists is that a pound of body fat equals about 3,500 dietary calories.

Basal metabolism consumes about ten calories per pound of body weight. That is, if you weigh 120 pounds, you will burn about 1,200 dietary calories per day just sitting in a chair, eating, thinking, going to the bathroom, and other basic body functions.

It's up to you to consume the further excess calories you need if you want to lose weight. A good dietary target for a healthy person who wants to lose weight is to train your body to be comfortable on a diet of about 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day and 12 to 20 grams of fat. You can train your body to be comfortable with such a consumption level, and you will eventually learn to enjoy it.

At that level, if you also consume another 400-600 calories per day through physical activities, you can lose a pound a week, which is a healthy rate. Remember the old saying, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels."

Good luck!

a pound is equal to 3500 calories, but you don't physically have to BURN 3500 calories to lose a pound. your body burns around 1200 calories everyday all on its own just by functioning, so to burn off a pound, exercise a little more and eat a little less, and the pounds will come off in no time.
