There's more than one type.
The typical sword with the very flexible tip and french grip would be a "foil". A hit to any part of the chest scores a point.
The other one used that is more rigid, has a larger bell and usually a pistol grip is an "epee". A hit anywhere on the body scores a point.
And the third that is typically used would be a sabre. I've never used one of these so I can't comment on it.

Foils were basically practice swords used pretty much like bamboo shinai swords in Kendo and Rattan sticks in arnis.
Epees were heavier and were basically an offshoot of Rapiers, the sword used by European gentlemen during the 15th century for duels, and were basically employed by thrusting at exposed targets while lunging at the opponent. But unlike Rapiers, Epees were used merely to draw first blood and not to kill to determine who won the duel.
Sabres were mostly used by Cavalry officers to fight both on horseback and on foot, so slashing is more predominant over thrusting techniques.
