After you type something, you see a book with a pencil at the bottommost bar writing as you type. Right click that book and clik 'Options' on the menu that appears. Then you get a small window titled 'Spelling and Grammar'. Under 'Grammar', check the box that says 'Readbility Statistics' and click 'OK'. Then continue typing.

Press F7 if you want a grammar check. After the check, the statistics window containing character count, word count, sentence count, paragraph count, average characters per word, average words per sentence, average sentences per paragraph, percentage of passive sentences, Reading ease and Language Grade level will appear.

Character count will appear at the bottom bar for a moment after you open a saved document. This window will show you all relevant statistics.

You've 2 options:-

1) As soon as you open a file in MS-Word, see the lowermost bar (where you can see details about the page number, line number, column number, etc). You'll find the number of characters in the file there, but only in the beginning.

2) Go to Tools, & then Word Count. You'll get the number of characters in the file, both with & without spaces !!

Just hit the F7 key. It'll bring up a window with all that stuff in it.
