I've read several posts on this. I find it strange what the logic is . They never had a car before . I think all should get a beater (A nice older car). if they take care of it . Then help them with a newer used car purchase.

At 16 I would have been happy to drive any thing . With college costs ,get them the $3000 special you can get 4-6+ of them for price of new car and save on insurance.
Don't give me a reliability thing . I buy cars for work with 60000 miles and run them till 120000 or so with no major problems.
Any car from 95 and newer is a safe ride ,Air bags ETC.

Its just a status thing.

I didn't say that buying a car for a kid is bad or that if a parent chooses to get them a ride is bad . Some need a ride for work or to school.

I remodeled a Honda dealership I saw kids every day wall passed the used car row and go look at a identical car but with sticker in window. Why do the expect a new one??

my parents actually bought me my first car. it was a 2000 neon with no air. but i had summer jobs before then. all before i was 16. i go to the community college and help pay for it. and i work 40 hours at my job. plus maintain good grades. but the students that go to my college can be really stuck up and spoiled. kids are just dumb and want to have the best of things to show off how rich their PARENTS are. and now im paying for my 2005 neon with air.

It's funny my 16 yr old thinks this too, of course he doesn't want to hear why should he get a car when my wife and I have to share the one we've got. I actually have a story about this from my senior year of high school(1991), I was talking to a friend in the parking lot before school she was driving her father's Bronco, I had a 1976 Camaro, when we noticed another kid pulling in the lot with a brand new M-B SL500. Our first thought was "rich snob". On the other end of the spectrum there was another girl at our school who drove there everyday in a 57' Ford.

I'm turning 18 this summer and I still don't have any car. First of all because it is not an absolute necessity, and secondly, I would rather put that money towards college. It was my decision not to have any car, not my parents. Not all kids are spoiled and self centered. I avoid buying expensive things because I know that my parents are the ones paying for it. A lot of teens don't even think about where the money comes from.

Well, im 18,
I have a 2003 durango i got at 16. It was a new car and i am not going to lie i did "expect" it. I can see how you think thats wrong but its not something that can not just be answered, some parents are different.

My friend brandon got a "BranNew" 1967 Gt Mustang With 167,000 miles and he LOVES it!

He's going to work and fix it up.
Thats another alternative for "most Kids"

I see it as,
You wanna nice car?
Heres a "Possible future" nice car
Get a Job
Fix it up
LOOK! Nice car!

The rich kids all got brand new mustangs when I was in school. All of those new cars were wrecked, and they seemed to get another new car to replace it. One kid totalled his brand new car, and got another brand new one to replace it. Later that same week, no kidding, he totalled that one. He got another new one to replace it, and in two weeks time, had totalled that one. Beautiful, isn't it? heh. At least the laws for minors are more strict now.

Used cars are good for beginning drivers because they can learn to deal with car problems early on. My first car was a 10 yr old ford. It worked wonderful at first, then a few years later it really started to die. I remember shifting in to neutral at red lights to keep the car from dying. I never would have learned that if I had a new car. It really taught me not to freak out when the car dies, so when I was hours away from home, all alone, I would know what to do. I'm thankful for the experience, even if it was embarrassing at first.

Teens today are spoiled rotten that's why they demand and get a new car at 16.
My parents had two cars and wouldn't let me drive either. I used my savings to buy my first car at age 18. It was an older car that I paid $200 for and it was like a Cadillac to me.

It has become an "in thing", something like a rite of passage for a 16 year old to have his/her own car. To bad. My first car was a Chevy PU, 10 years old, that I purchased by selling my calfs. I was in my 20's at the time.

to be cool at school, frankly i think a new driver should get a old beat up car because you usually wreck your first car and when they properly learn how to drive they can get a good one
