The pain of the needle feels like a cat scratching you very slowly. Really! The main outline of the picture hurts a little more than the coloring in.
Afterwards, the tattoo feels like a sunburn.
Personally, I don't know if it would hurt more on the wrist, but I'd imagine it would because of the veins there. I got mine done on a more fatty area so mine would hurt less than one done on the wrist.

well I disagree about how the outline hurts the most. it depends on how often the needle goes near a given spot while you're getting the tattoo. your skin gets really sensetive and returning to that same sensetive area really stings.
I have three cat tattoos. tattooing the details of the face really hurt because the facial features requiring the most detail were all within a small area and that meant continuing to irritate the same area for several minutes. in contrast, the tail of each cat didn't hurt as much because it was just a tail and didn't require hanging around that area for very long after it initially became irritated.
that 1st person is sort of right about it feeling like a continuous cat scratch. that is a good way to begin describing it because a cat's nail is very fine-point and precise, just like the needle. i hate the sound of the needle, it sounds like it is going to hurt which makes some people tense up and hurt even more.
The soft part of the wrist is kinda thin. I have a large, circular tattoo on the inside of my right foot between my ankle and my heel, where the skin is very thin. It felt like the vibrations were going through my foot. Fatty areas (like the back of my neck) don't feel like that because the fat seems to absorb the vibration better, i guess. I also have a tattoo down the side of my ribcage, which is bone covered by a very thin layer of skin. The worst part was the moments where the needle moved from the flesh (inbetween ribs) onto the beginning of the rib, for each rib. The bony part of the wrist may feel something like that but the ribs are definitely worse than the wrist, so don't worry!!!
Basically, tattooing hurts but its a head game. The more you get nervous and tense up, the more you think you are hurting. The sound doesn't help. It worth it and I've had other things happen to me that hurt a lot worse.

I think that anyone who says a tattoo doesn't hurt is full of $hit. No doubt about it they hurt. I know some people have different pain tollerance, but bottom line is they hurt like hell. The best thing I can compare it too is taking a hot soldering iron and sticking it into your skin and moving it back and forth. The pain goes from stinging to burning to ahhh its almost over. My first tattoo took 2 and 1/2 hours and by the end I was about to give up. My second tattoo took 1 hour and was still as painful. No way to avoid the pain...Just make sure that your tattoo is something that you have really thought about and most of all has some meaning, otherwise why do it. I find that it helps when my girlfriend comes with me, its nice to have a pretty face to look at when the pain starts grinding my nerves. Good luck..

The closer to the bone, the more it's going to hurt. For example, if you get a tat on your butt, no sweat...the wrist, I might get a bit sweaty. However, the way I describe the pain is like being scratched on a bad sunburn...but on the bone, you're going to feel more of the vibration and pressure of the gun/needle. Also, I find that talking to the artist while getting the tat calms and distracts me from the pain (I have a pretty high thresh-hold, though). Good luck and remember, it's forever ;) (I hear removal is a lot more painful)

I have 5 tattos, to me the only bad part about it is...well it feels like a scartch you cant itch, very irratating. But a million people can get on here and tell you it doesnt hurt but you will still go and be nervous as hell and not trust any ones opionion. like i said i have 5 but still everytime i go to get one i get really nervous even though i know how it feels. The pain however is just based on how well that person takes pain. It hurts worst on some places then it does others. The closer to the bone the more painful. Good luck

I have a tatoo on my wrist approx 2x2 of a shamrock and it hurt. what i found was actually watching them do the tatoo seemed to make it hurt less. When i mentioned it to my artist he says its something to do with your mind being able to associate a cause with the pain and to prepare for it. I had mine done twice because the wrist is a very hard place to heal. Keep that in mind when planning your tat! Good luck and hope it comes out great!

Not like a pencil. More of a burn - like a constant low level burn with periodic intensity. I have found that focusing on the sensation of the feeling decreases the painfulness. Like focus on exactly what it feels like - not "bad" not "good" just the actual sensations. (Worked for my 2 oldest sons who have tattoos.)

Its like a needle ripping through your skin. Its not that bad, but it burns. Yeah it will hurt, but its worth it!
