At this point I really have no clue. I'm thinking of a headlight that can clip onto a ball cap cause I know he looked at them but I don't know what he really thought about 'em. I really don't wanna do a gift card if I can help it cause in my mind that's a cop out to be used as a last resort.
I know, I know, get 'em a gift card or money and let them get something their really gonna like. But I much prefer to try and get an idea what they like and try to get it for them. Then it's less "Hey, see what you got me" when folks use their gift card or money on their gift. Plus by giving them a gift they like that isn't one of those two, folks can start using, and enjoying, it almost as soon as they get it.
But like I say, that's who I am and not who the rest of you are or may be.

I got my dad a figurine of Britney flashing a beav (I wish I could find a link to it, but it's her famous crotch shot immortalized in plastic. Dad will love it).
My father-in-law is getting a clock with the lake he is moving to on it (like this: http://www.prettygoodgoods.org/images/products/10/5029-30.jpg )
I'd get your dad the gift card. Tools are hard to buy because you don't know what he's already got or what he needs and I know my husband is very picky when it comes to tools.

Well..
To start off, I obviously got him a Father's Day card. The day or so before Father's Day, I'm going to get a scratch lottery ticket for him, as I got one for my mom for her b-day and Mother's Day, and she won both times (so hopefully I will have luck with this one too lol). I'll put the ticket in the card.
Other then that, so far I've gotten him a tall, glass tankard that says "World Class Dad" on it (absolutely gorgeous). I am also getting him this pillow that says, "World's Greatest Dad", and on the back, there's a photo holder which I will put a photo of my older brother and I when we young. As well, I am going to Things Engraved in our mall and I'm getting this golf keychain (he LOVES golf), and on the golf ball in the centre, I will engrave "#1 Dad."
As for some smaller gifts, I already bought him a $10 gift cerficate to Tim Hortons (he goes there every time he goes out lol) and I will put it in the glass tankard. Then I got him this adorable blue picture frame that says, "Daddy + Me" and there's hearts all around the frame. I'm going to make a collage of him and I and my brother, growing up. And finally I got him some heart shaped chocolates as he has a big sweet tooth. :)
I also got my grandpa on my mom's side a blue ceramic mug that says "my grandpa is the best!" with red hearts and a red handle, and then I got him a $5 gift certificate to Tim Hortons to put in the mug as he loves that place as well. And of course a FD card and a scratch lottery ticket to put inside the card (another fan of lottery tickets). He and my grandmother helped to raise my brother and I when we were young and when my parents were at work so he acted like my 2nd dad in many ways.
I am wrapping everythng in gift bags and gift boxes with wrapping paper to match.
For Father's Day, I am going to spend time with my dad, cook for him, and grandfather as well.

He said that he ran out of Kona Coffee, so I took that as a hint! LOL He's getting 100% Kona Coffee and a Hawaiian print polo shirt. (He requested something from Hawaii that I haven't sent before).
I would really like to suprise him and fly home, but I can't afford it, so the above will have to do. :(

i'm not really here to answer what to give to my dad this father's day. i just want to commend you for doing that. fathers, whether we like them or not, exert effort, time and even sacrifice for our part. gifts are symbols of appreciation.
my father died December of 2005. we were not able to celebrate Christmas with him alive. one of my greatest disappointment in life (somehow, i already have gotten over this) was the thought that i never told him how much i love him.
and it remains, the greatest gift you can give is to love your dad in words and actions..",)
