Why do singers mostly grab their stomachs when they bend down or sing?

I mean when I saw singers singing in concerts, they grabbed their stomachs only one time. I mean why do they do that?

As a professional singer, I must say that I never grab my stomach in order to "remind myself to breathe" or "help me sing better." Often, any time I do this, it is more in reaction to the text I am singing.

For example, if I was hanging out with a group of friends, and was talking about something that had happened to me, I would often use hand gestures while speaking, most likely incorporating the "hand to stomach" gesture in question. As we singers try to be as natural as possible on stage, I can only assume that I transfer my interpersonal habits into my performance. Therefore, the "hand to stomach" motion is a natural, non-premeditated action that is in no way intended to help my singing technique.

On a side note, in order to inform many of the misinformed answerers of this question, I need to address this issue of the diaphragm. This muscle is ENTIRELY misunderstood. In short, it is shaped like an upside down bowl, and is attached to the bottom of the lungs. Its function is ONLY to assist in the inhalation process, along with the external intercostal muscles around the ribcage. Basically, when one inhales, the "bowl" pulls downward on the lungs, creating a vaccuum within the lungs. This is what causes air to flow into the body. At that point, the diaphragm relaxes, and has absolutely no effect whatsoever on exhaling, speaking, or singing. All of the breath support to which most answerers of this question refer comes from the lower abdominal and internal intercostal muscles, NOT the diaphragm.

singers do that because there is a muscle in your lower stomach area called the diaphragm. when you sing from your diaphragm, you get a better tone. so the singer was probably getting a little winded from singing so much so they grabbed their stomach to keep the tone up 'til the end of the song where they could take a quick rest.

When people sing correctly they use the diaphragm, which is a muscle below the lungs. It is supposed to inflate and deflate as you inhale and exhale so the singers touch their stomachs to remind them of the correct breathing so a good sound continues. Sometimes if you sing for a while you get a little out of breath and it becomes second nature to place your hand on your diaphragm to help.

yep.. when you sing its not from your throat.. like most inexperienced singers do. its from your diaphragm or more commonly said as stomach. singers put their hands on their stomach to make sure they are sining from their stomachs. some do it when they are hitting a high note. another thing they do is put their finger in their ear so they can hear their real selves because you sound different in your head than you do in real life. thats why all those people truley believe they can sing on American Idol.

I know when I took singing lessons my teacher taught me that putting ur hand over ur stomache while u sing is a good way to make sure ur breathing right

Dont listen to the person that said its sex appeal, im a singer myself, and it helps to make sure you dont push yourself to far, and are hitting that note you need to, its not all in the vocal cords, most of it is...but when you need to hit that big note it helps to grab your stomach for support

When I sing I sometimes do that because it gives me a sense of control and yes, it probably does have to do with singing from your diaphragm.

I'll just add my 2 cents...

Notice that some singers flex their neck down... that's a great trick to make the voice deeper. The opposite happens for higher notes.

And... OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! The diaphragma.....Yes, it hurts a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
