A while ago I applied for a waitressing job, and today they called me and told me to come in for an interview. I was hired, but after they hired me they told me the 50 million rules: no jewelry, no makeup, no nailpolish, special shoes must be worn, hair has to be in a bun. All kinds of stupid crap. I'm not interested in the job, but I just sort of nodded during the interview, because I didn't wanna jump up and be like "No thanks!" How do I gracefully get out of this?

Technically, you are NOT hired until you sign a formal job offer (where they spell out everything - including salary, hours to be worked, conditions ("rules"), etc.)

If you did sign something like this, you are still entitled to walk away as they dumped all of these conditions on you AFTER you signed - and it sounds like they did this deliberately!

You could always tell them that something else has come up (and if they push, tell them it's another job) - but do whatever you can to avoid details (that's the easiest way to get caught in a lie, btw)

I know that that probably is alot of crap, but remember that you are a waitdress. There are reasons for everything!

If your wearing jewels and it falls apart like with beads, big mess (happens to me alot!). If you have mascara on and your eyes get wet because of a spill of liquid, it will run. Nailpolish can chip off into peoples food, and people will get mad. If you fall on your new high heels, food splat! And people don't like hair in there food.

These are reasonable rules. And if it pays good, it is worth it.

If you already accepted the job, then you will need to, very politely and without reference to the "stupid crap", tell the manager that you really appreciate the confidence he / she showed in you, but you've reconsidered and will not be taking the job.

If the job was offered, but you haven't yet accepted it, then tell the manager that you really appreciate the confidence he / she showed in you, but you've decided not to accept the job.

BTW, never accept a job without having explored company policies / how the job works, etc. You should have all the information you need to make a good decision before accepting.
