I got a second hole in each of my ears and pierced the cartilage of my left ear as well a couple days ago. I got it done at Claire's and they used a gun. I had never heard anything bad about doing this until I decided to get online today to find out how long it will be sore - that's when I read quite a few comments about how bad it is to get it done with a gun. The lady that pierced my ears was older (she wasn't 16 as everyone thinks the workers are at Claire's). She has kids and she seemed to be very experienced. Anyway, I read that the gun can do some major damage to your ear - what can it do? How will I know if something is wrong with it? I got it done a couple days ago, and at the time, it didn't hurt at all, but now it is REALLY sore. At first it only hurt when I touched it or bumped it, but now it is kind of aching. Many people have told me it is completely normal, but is that true? If it is normal, how long will it hurt? I'd really appreciate some advice - thanks!

believe me, when they say its dangerous to use a gun on your top part of the ear its because it can shatter the hard cartilage. BUT, if yours was shattered, believe me, there would be NO question about it. you would know it. yea, your ear is gonna hurt for about a week or so because you sleep on it and hit it. the pain will stop.

Piercing with a gun can be a lot more risky than using a needle for a few reasons. As someone said, the gun cannot be autoclaved, therefore is not as clean as a single use piercing needle for example. Also the studs that the gun use are nowhere near as sharp as a needle, nor do they have the shape, needing a lot more force to pierce it which can damage the cartilidge. Now as you have been told, cartildge piercings take a lot longer to heal, can be as little as 2-3 months but up to a year. It will be sore, possibly aching or more of a dull throbbing for a few weeks, dependant on if you sleep on it or catch it a lot etc. However there could also be a possibility that your allergic to nickel, that could be causing some issues.
Give it a couple of weeks, see if the aching stops, if its causing problems ibruprofen to reduce swelling and take a bit of the pain off with help. If it continues to be a problem go to a good piercing studio, and ask one of the piercers you'll find theyre more than happy to help you out.

Since it was done by a gun its going to hurt a little more than if done by a professional body piercer, you're going to have to wait out the pain, but its still going to hurt either way. There's nothing wrong with getting it pierced with a gun just a little riskier. it will hurt for about a month on and off. Just make sure you keep up with the aftercare, I cant stress that enough! And i suggest you not removing or changing the cartilage piercing until the 12 week mark to be sure that it won't close up on you.

Unfortunately that pain is normal, I had both sides of my cartilage when I was younger pierced at a store in the mall.
I ended up taking those out a few years ago...now I'm 26 and just got my industrial pierced (sideways piercing thru the cartilage) the end of February....I took it out last week because the pain was so bad.
I have found out that your cartilage on your ear is one of the worst areas to pierce because it can take up to or longer than a year to heal and anytime you bump it or hit it with your hairbrush you ruin the healing process.
I hit mine so much that I couldn't take it anymore, I only had it 3 months.
It sucks that their is nothing you can really do except take Ibuprofen for swelling and pain, but that didn't work for me.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Using a gun on cartilidge is very dangerous....

for 1. There is really no way for them to completely sanitize the guns....so just imagine how many other people they pierced with the gun...

It will take longer to heal than your earlobes of course but if its red, you might want to talk to your doctor. You might have an infection. Where you given any kind of cleanser?

My sister had her ear cartilage done four times. She said it hurts a lot for a long time, but after a while your body adjusts, and now she can pull on them all she wants with earrings in and she doesn't feel it.
