Well there is basically Three: Rifles, Shotguns and Handguns.
A rifle fires a single bullet accurately because it has spiral grooves cut into the barrel (called rifling) that make the bullet spin giving it a stable flight. A shotgun fires numerous small pellets at once from a smooth bore barrel, mainly used for hunting fling birds . A handgun is usually rifled and its main concern is that it can be fired by one hand and can be easily carried about the person.

There are numerous way these guns load ammunition. Some are single shot but most have a magazine to store ammo and have either a manual method of loading another cartridge (Bolt action, lever action Pump action) or use either the recoil of the weapon or the gas a cartridge firing create to work the action and load another round this is called semi automatic or self loading. Machine gun are are self loading arms that have a trigger mechanism that will allow it to fire as load as the trigger is pulled.

Another way to answer.

Muzzleloading-the earliest and most primitive forms of guns where blackpowder and bullet is poured into the end of the barrel and set off by a sparking device of some sort.

Breechloading. Where powder and bullets and generally sparking device are already held together by a 'cartridge'. Which may be either made of plastic, paper, brass and a few other substances. The cartridge itself is placed into a chamber behind the firearms barrel generally, and a striking device initiates firing. The empty cartridge can then be ejected or removed and a new one placed in for firing. This is much faster than muzzleloading and includes most modern firearm types(handgun, shotgun, rifle).

What is your question, Diamond? There are many types of gun. Handguns: Revolvers (single n double action), semi-automatics (single action on first shot, double action on first shot, double action only), derringers, single shot hunting pistols, multi-barrel pepperbox type derringers, automatic assault pistols, etc.

Rifles: Single shot, bolt action, lever action, pump action, semi-automatic, double rifles, rifle/shotgun combos, etc.

Shotguns: Single barrel, double barrel side-by-side, over n under, automatic, pump action, lever action, etc.

The list is pretty endless.
