Normally, a police officer has to be on the job for a certain amount of time prior to moving up in the ranks to Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, etc. Position testing is not a term I am familiar with, but I do know about taking tests for promotions. When a position opens up in a department, a test is conducted for that position and all eligible departmental members may take the test if they wish to try for that position.
