This has to do with different parents. Stepchildren.

When one says "half of them are boys," it implies that the other half are girls. So to answer this puzzle by saying that that 3, 4 or 5 of them were boys stretches the meaning of the word "half." I like one of the answers above. One of them was a hermaphrodite. (Read "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides for more information).

The only way for this to work is if all of the children are boys. Then half of the children are boys, and the other half are boys too.

3, 4, or 5 of them were boys. It doesn't say only half or that any were girls.
