A small mutt with a lot of love would be perfect. I have a maltez mix that came from the pound, she was a little shy, but after a lot of kisses and lovin, she is doin wonderful.

Hi there. I would suggest getting a Chihuahua. Being the smallest of all breeds, they are not high maintenance and are easy to take care of. If you get a long-haired Chihuahua, you might need to groom it once in a while.

Chihuahuas can be a little hyper at times, especially when they have not seen you for a long time. Other than that, Chihuahuas are by nature, loving and sweet-tempered creatures.

Chihuahuas are also suitable for living in small homes, this could be an apartment or condominium. Their need for exercise can be met indoors with toys and play sessions. However, you can also bring them outdoors. My Chihuahua loves it when I take him for walks.

Chihuahuas have a stubborn streak which may make them difficult to train. But with patience and love, you will eventually succeed as they are intelligent creatures.

I got my Chihuahua when he was 5-6 months old. I think that is the most appropriate age to get a dog because it is best to train them while they are still young.

If you want to look into other small dog breeds, I highly recommend visiting http://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/

Good luck!

Chihuahuas are the ultimate lap dog. You could get a long haired one. It isn't as long as some breeds and can be kept beautiful with a daily brushing. Chihuahuas are awesome! Get a pup at about 8-10 wk old and check out the breeder thoroughly. Make sure the pups are raised in the home.

I highly suggest a maltese. They are known as lap dogs, and have the sweetest temperment. A female (neutered)is usually more docile than a male.I have had one now for the past sixteen years. As a matter of fact,June 6 is her 16th birthday! I may be a bit partial to malteses, but in my opinion, they are the best. They are actually in the spaniel family, not in the terrier family. That is a myth. They are maltese spaniels, not maltese terriers. They are one of the oldest breeds of dogs. As terriers tend to be a bit more noisy and tempermental,a maltese is not like that. They come in various sizes.I highly recommend a breeder. This way you know what type of dog you are getting;you can usually see tthe mother/father. There is no middleman involved, so the price can actually be cheaper!! And no mixtures of pedigrees like malti-poo,shitzi-poo,yorkie-poo,etc..calvo

In my opinion I would suggest a Papillon. I have my own little pack, I have 2 white/red, 3 sables, 2 tri's, and a white/black. I also have 3 KIDS!! I don't care what anyone says about Papillons not being good with children, or about paps being to tiny or fragile to have if you got kids too. I have taught all 3 of my daughters not to pull hair, ears, or tails. I also teach them not to pokes eyes. By the way I have a Parson Russell too (my husbands dog) Papillons are active dogs, they do great in agility. BUT they also love to cuddle on the couch or in bed with you. Papillons don't suffer from alot of congenital diseases either. Although they can suffer from PRA (eyes) which can cause blindness and luxation patellas. It's not often that these occur but it can. They have a single coat so they don't she much as long as you brush them like weekly. I hope this helps you. Good luck finding your perfect little lap warmer. :)

I have a short haired Dachshund and she is amazing. Some small dogs require frequent hair cuts and nail clipping and so on. But Chloe only needs her nails clipped every couple of weeks, and doesn't require alot of maintenance at all. The only thing she is picky about is using the bathroom, it takes her forever to find a spot, and she doesn't like the grass to be wet or too long because she is so low to the ground.

She is great with my kids, and loves to be held and loved on. But every dog you get is going to need SOMETHING special. Alot of dogs has skinn allergies, or dryness problems. Dachshunds have alot of back problems with old age, so they shouldn't be allowed to jump on and off furniture, or stand up on thier hind legs. (no matter how cute it is) But that's about it.

Good Luck Dog Hunting!

I've been a vet tech for 10 years and boston terriers are my favorites... never met a bad one, less genetic disorders than some like yorkies or poms, outgoing, sweet, good looking, they're the total package! Make sure whatever you get you go to a reputable breedner, never a petstore!

If you are willing to brush/groom the dog 3-5 times a week, then go with
Pekingese: not very energetic, a definite lapdog. Do not do well in very hot weather, are stubborn, but are affectionate with the owner.

Yorkshire Terrier: They don't need much exercise, they usually can get it by running around in the home. They do need a daily brush though. They are very playful!

For something a little more low maintenance:
a Chihuahua: Very little dogs, and happen to need very little exercise. They have a diverse set of personalities, but tend to be loyal to one specific person. Prefers indoors.

You really should look at the American Kennel Club for some ideas - www.akc.org. I think they have a Q&A to help you figure out a good dog for your situation.

There are some good quiet dogs, but I have dachshunds and I know that's NOT what you want (even though they're great for me).

Try iams.com. I'm going to try to put the link below. They give you a lot of info on how to chose the right pet for you. I used it when I adopted my doggies. Your local shelter should also be able to help you out and who knows you might fall in love with one there. I adopted both of my dogs from my local SPCA and I love them
