Why the cut-off date of 1948 for dual citizenship?

My father's mother was born in Italy. My sisters and I wanted to see if we were qualified to apply for dual citizenship, however our father was born before 1948, in 1942. The website we were provided stated our father had to be born in our native country after January 1, 1948. Why is that? Is there any way around this? Thanks!

Your father's mother couldn't transmit the Italian nationality to his son (your father) if he's born prior to January 1, 1948 because this is a deadline fixed by when the new law allowed women to pass Italian citizenship "jure sanguinis" (by right of blood) on to their children. Earlier than 01/01/48 children were receiving Italian nationality just from their father.
However if your grandfather (your father's father) was Italian citizen then also your father would be Italian citizen and you can apply for the dual citizenship,

Martox is right. But "new law" is an opinion by Constitutional Court that old citizenship act violated Italian Constitution.
Italian Constitution took effect in January 1, 1948.

Today Italian Parliament is discussing about reforming this aspect and so extending the transmission of citizenship. But it is discussed in a complex reform of citizenship law. Therefore it's impossible to say whether o when this issue will be approved
