I did once, but the doctor said it was nothing, no need to worry about it. But I'm curious to know what causes it?
Could it be kidney stones? Coz I used to get serious abdominal pains.

I don't know much about children, but rectal bleeding in adults is usuallly from straining at the toilet or, perhaps, a change of diet...stool softeners are indicated if the child is straining at the toilet and stool is hard...the large intestive takes as much water out as possible...if straining at the toilet is a problem, adding fiber to the diet is good for all ages...

kidney stones are passed through the ureter where "passed through" is an understatement

You would have blood in your urine if you had kidney stones. Anal bleeding needs to be addressed by a doctor, but one reason children might bleed is from straining when they go to the bathroom due to constipation.

Children do not bleed from their anus. If there is rectal bleeding then something is going on and it needs to be checked out by the doctor.

My mother would say that it is fissures--small tears--in the skin from a hard or irregular-shaped bowel movement. This happens when people don't chew their food enough or don't drink enough liquid.

It's not normal. It could be caused from large stool that causes tearing as it tries to pass through, or it could be from abuse or disease.
