I have a tattoo on my back in sanskrit that originally meant something meaningful to me. A couple of days ago I walked shirtless past this gentleman from Nepal who could read sankrit. He told me the meaning on my back was totally off. So I thought it could just be a dialect issue or of the sort so I went to my university prof. who specials in sanskrit (lucky me), and he said that the meaning was far from what I intended.

Here's a big problem to this. I had this tattoo done a while monthes ago. The artist might not even remember me, but still, should I go back to complain about the tattoo? Since there is a time issue I don't know how to go about this. Is it right to ask for my money back or for the artist to cover my tattoo up with a different one? Or am I just crap out of luck? I'm really pissed because I was passionate about the word/symbol on my back. Now I find out that it means something completely the opposite (something vulgar and insulting).
Please help me with replies asap!

you cannot be upset with the artist you should have asked your professor about this first

This is the thing about getting forgien words/symbols tattooed. If you weren't sure of the meaning when you got it then you shouldn't have gotten it. However if your artist led you to believe it said something other than what it means he is at full responsibilty to cover/remove and refund this tattoo. I wouldn't approach him angrily about it because he may have been led to believe it was what he told you. Hes not a professor after all...hes just a tattoo artist. And most are more than happy to fix their work if you're not satisfied. Good luck though!

You are just crap out of luck. I am sure you told the tattoo artist what you wanted....you probably even showed him a picture or viewed illustrations with him/her. I'm pretty sure you didn't just say "Oh, I want this saying tattooed on my back, and, oh yeah, it's in sanskrit" and he said "Sure thing, I know that one by heart." So what are you going to complain about....that he didn't know what the symbol meant and you didn't either but you agreed to it? If I were you, I sure wouldn't ask for my money back, but I would sure be willing to pay more money to get it fixed. All the same....go back to your tattooist and explain your problem. Most tattoo artists want their customers to love their work...you are their best advertisement. He/she will probably do all they can to help you, but I doubt it will be free.

Did you provide the tattoo design to the artist or did he do it? If the artist created the complete design, you can try and go back to discuss it. If you provided it...I'm afraid you may be out of luck. The time factor may be an issue, but a reputable artist will usually take care of any problems. I doubt you'd get your money back, but they may be willing to correct it or cover it up if they created the whole tattoo and the translation error was theirs. Good luck and I hope it turns out well for you.

It can't hurt to try. Did you bring in the sanskrit, or did you pick out the tattoo at the parlor? If it's your mistake, then you'll have to pay for the change. If it's theirs, you've got a case. Threaten to take him to small claims court for the price of the tattoo if he balks. They're a small business and word of mouth is a big part of it. They don't need any bad press.

At the very least, they need to remove the "mistake" from their inventory so future clients don't make the same mistake.

that is the problem with getting something that you know nothing about. it is utterly ridiculous for people to get tattoos coming from a culture that they have nothing to do with. most tattoo shops have a policy that says they are not responsible for the interpretation of the tattoo that is placed on you. your best bet is to have it covered up with something else. it most likely won't be free but at least you can have something done about it. maybe next time you will really think about a prospective tattoo you'll be getting and be more informed about meanings and interpretations.

you should like your tattoo it is going to be inked into your back 4ever. if it is not 2 big with 2 many colors u might be able to get it removed but if not you should try working out something with the artist about a coverup or a refund.

if your not happy with it, you should go back to your tattoo artist and bring proof that it's not what you intended it to mean. tell him your story. he might do the cover up job for free. if he says that it's not his problem, i would go to a new tattoo artist and try to cover it up with something you find meaningful. at least, this wouldn't bother you anymore.

Complain and make him cover up your tatoo. Learn from this. I research all my tattoos 100% before putting in on my body. Ask for a copy and ask ???
