I have a retainer and only wear it at night. My dentist recommended that I only wear it at night. But you have to wear it every night.

You really should wear them every night. If you don't it will take that much longer to fix the problem, and every time you go to the dentist he will measure the movement and he will tell if you are following his directions. Besides at the beginning it is when you need to wear them a.m. and p.m., and eventually you will only have to wear them at night. If you are wearing your retainers, because you just got your braces off, it's very important to keep your teeth straight so they don't move after the braces did their job. You don't want to start at the beginning again.

Teeth are all different. If your bone hasn't reset enough and your orthodontist is afraid your teeth will move too much during the day then he may want you to wear them all the time until the teeth become more set. After a few months he probably will allow you to go to wearing them at night. All retainers are different and if your teeth move to much they don't always fit anymore and then you are SOL. I would try your best to do as you are told, and I would discuss going to nights the next time you are there and see what his/her opinion is.

i know they are a pain to wear but it is really important to wear them all the time as instructed, it should only be for the first couple of months then your dentist should reduce the wearing time to nights/12hrs a day.
You will be happy you wore them in a few years when your teeth havn't moved and you don't need to have braces back on!!

If you dont wear your retainer all day your teeth will start to move back to where they were before you had your braces on

HELLO SERENA,
IF DON'T WEAR IT AS YOUR DENTIST SUGGESTS THEN IT WILL TAKE LONGER FOR THE CASE TO COMPLETE.
EVENTUALLY YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WEAR IT ONLY AT NIGHT.
