If science is all based on theories, then how is saying you believe in science any different than a Christian saying they believe in God and the Bible.

P.S. though this may be biased if you say we can test certain things well people 100, 200, 300 etc. years ago believed they had it right and were proven wrong. We may look silly 100 years from now.

Theory, when used in science, is not the same as the word theory in everyday language. It is a model for describing naturally occuring observations. A theory is something that has not been disproven.

On that note, a scientist does not say something is proven, we say things are not disproven, and that is a big difference.

It is different than believing in the god of the bible becuase your god cannot be subjected to the sceintific method. Period. Nothing about science revolves around blind faith, which believing fictional stories in the bible mandates you do.

I am afraid that this may be falling on deaf ears. Science is a highly disciplined field. If you can't, or choose not to understand the science behind the things that happen to you in daily life, there is nothing me, or any other logical thinking person will be able to do to help you.

There is more to say, but like I said before, I am pretty sure nothing I, or any other scientist, can say that you will understand until you take the time to understand science.

It is different in that most scientific "truths" have overwhelming evidence to support them while religious "evidence" in most cases lead to faith. It's that simple. Science does not work by taking things as truth without evidence (the very definition of faith). It looks at all possibilities pertaining to the subjects tested, tests those possibilities rigerously, and documents every finding. The observations that occur the most often are the truth.

If evidence changes through the use of new technology or the thoughts of new possibilities, then the truth changes.

Religion, on the other hand, uses the gullibility and need of man to conform to pass what they call truth. Though there is some evidence of their claims, they always look at it with their biases based on whatever holy text or word that has been passed down to them. They reject all evidence against what they believe in purely on faith.

In regards to theories, a few holes does not make a theory incorrect (and certainly doesn't show that the religious view is correct either). A difference in scientific theories and religious theories is that scientific ones each have a few holes among all the truths that support a theory. Religious theories have a ton of holes in each one and only a few truths within them, with the rest of the "truths" based on faith.

I have to add that religious people seem to think that there is something wrong with change in the truth. It's usually for the better in regards to science, because holding on to false "truths" from the past can have disasterous results. Keep in mind; a lot of the wrong ideas humans had from hundreds of years ago was based on religion and later corrected by science. Had we stuck with the religious point of view with these ideas and procedures (anyone remember bloodletting?) the world would be a lot more messed up now.

As opposed to Christians, who already look silly.
And, truth be told, have really always looked silly.

Edit:
I always find it amusing how many people lump humanity into two categories: Atheists + science, and Theists + faith.

You do realize that EVERYONE believes in science right? You drive a car, use a computer, watch tv, eat mass produced food, etc... because you believe in tested theories that have panned out and you trust that these things will work like they're supposed to. And if they don't, then SCIENCE can concretely demonstrate exactly why not.

100 years from now, many theories may be laughed at. But the basic framework in which these thories came about, the scientific method, will still be in use. This is much better than the Christian's idea that "things are here because we really, really want them to be." (i.e. blind faith).

We may look silly in six months from now. The difference is that science constantly accepts this need to adapt to new information rather than contorting the evidence because it doesn't fit with a pre-existing theory. That's science. The foolish determination to stick with your old ideas at all costs is what is called religion.

Not everything based in the realm of science is theory...

It's a fact that cigarettes are a serious risk to your health.
It's a fact that gravity keeps us planted firmly on the ground.
It's a fact that too much of any particular OTC drug is a not good for your health.
It's a fact that diet and exercise are good for your body.
It's a fact that eating too much food high in cholesterol increases your chances of having a stroke or a heart attack.

I could go on and on and on and give many more examples, but my point is, science discovered all these things.

Believing in a religion is pure hope...and blind faith....some of which might pan out...but as far as the "end results" is concerned...i don't see it panning out.

Christians: "I believe in the Bible. It's the truth because it says it is!"

Scientists: "I believe that I should apply rules of logic, reason and experimentation to see how the world works. I will TRY and find the truth, wherever it can be found."

Clearer now?

Because of what makes logical sense or not when put to a real analytical examination and how it compares to what's already known. Science makes perfect sense, an omnipotent creator being is illogical.

science is not based on theories.
science is
observable
testable
repeatable
If it is a theory it has not fulfilled these requirements

because a belief in the scientific method is based in fact and clear observation.

belief in cultism is based upon silly myths and nonsense found in old, unprovable books full of ridiculous stories.

see the difference?

Class dismissed!!
