Depends on how old the child is. If the phone is not abused and the child does well in school and knows how to act I think it is a great safety measure for a child.

I am a child (16)
Yes I think my generation is excessivly spoiled. I use my phone to call my mom, and call my sister. Usually I can just call my friends on the house phone. I don't text, it is pointless and expensive. Whether or not your kid needs a phone depends on the circumstances. Don't get it just to be nice *cough*iphone*cough* or so that your child can be like their firends. If you do alot of traveling or your kids are in day care/latchkey, or play a lot of sprots and need to call you, or are incredibly social and hogging the alndline, then I would get them a cell phone. Otherwise I would not. If you get a cell phone for your kids becuase of the social reason, be sure to set boundries, may be an 100 a month text limit and a certain number of hours, or somthing.

I think a lot of parents have good intentions when it comes to cell phone but however i don't think they are necessary....if you have a pre teen or young teen then if its time for you to get a new cell or or something keep old one and give it to your kid ONLY when at a place where they might need to get a hold of you. Like if they are at practice or or at the mall or something like that....yet most places kids at that age shouldn't be unsupervised. When i have kids my kids will not be allowed to say "I'm going out, ill be be back later" they will have to have a specific place in mind and i need to know who with ill need at least one phone number. A cell phone of your kids they can tell you they are where ever they are suppose to, a land line keeps them where they are suppose to be. If the kid is somewhere they need the phone then give it to them but as soon as they get home, you get it back. DO NOT allow them to keep it on them and to have it. Remember this is the age where they try to get away with more because they decide they are "mature" they aren't'. They have myspace accounts and stuff...you want to make sure you know who your kids is talking to...know a better way then keeping it only to a land line?

I used to work for a mobile phone company, and I found that parents wanted cellphones for their kids in case of emergency. They want to know that their kids can contact them if they are in trouble. On the other hand, I had parents cancel their kids contracts after a few months cause they would spend hundreds of dollars calling their friends. The youngest child I sold a cellphone to was 8. I think that's a bit extreme, but I can see why the parents would worry.

No one really NEEDS a cell phone, especially not a child. If a parent buys a cell phone for their kid and pays the bill, then, yes, they are most definitely being spoiled. Now, if that 'child' gets a job and pays for the cell phone by him/herself, then it's totally ok. Still, I repeat, a child does not need a cellphone.

I'm 17, but I don't use a cell phone often enough to merit the cost. I probably only use the phone like once every two months. That is in general, even with my home phone. I never go any place that doesn't have a phone near by and people don't need to contact me.

Both of my boys have phone. One is 12 and one is 14. I gave them phones so I can get in touch with them when they are at friends houses or at athletic events. I like to know exactly where my kids are. Many phones are equipped with
GPS so we can make sure they are where they are supposed to be. I remember being left at ball practice until very late one night because of a mix up of who was going to pick me up. That is not happening with my kids. As far as being spoiled. Well, i guess better spoiled than picked up by one of those pedophiles.

Depends in which country you are in living in.In Asia most children go to cram schools between six and ten p.m. and they have to be in contact with their parents and their cram schools. In Finland because of the open country the children are connect via cell phone to their parents and school.
Then of coarse it is a fashion item like new style sports shoe .I am a parent and I do not use a cell phone but my wife and children do. My children started to use them when they become 8th grade.Where I live besides the cram school they have to belong to a club in school and all the kids are connected and pass messages via the cell phone. It has become a necessary evil. With the new generation cell phones you can keep track where your children are.
