Why do people get so worked up over other people's views?

Depends on what you mean by society. In the US it is manifested in the debates over the sanctity of life vs. a culture of death; such as abortion and euthanasia and in morality with the debate on homosexual marriage.

On the world stage it is played out daily in the clash of Western and Islamic cultures. The late 20th Century saw the beginning of a world wide Islamic Jihad. It is different than those of antiquity because it is not nationalistic but strictly religious.

All good reasons to “get worked up” about other peoples views, I’d say.

I think it is because we are approaching a turning point. The realm of the unknown previously ruled by the explanation of god has been increasingly worn away. This causes the theist to aggressively defend there antiquated belief system and scientists to badger them about how stupid they are. The whole problem is in the details. Theist are afraid to admit they are wrong on certain details for fear that there whole doctrine will be tossed. However if theist could simply cede certain obvious fact back into the realm of man then God could be redefined modernly to be applicable and relevant once again

There are many emotionally immature people who look to orgainzed religion to help them feel secure in themselves.

People fear what they don't understand - and an emotionally immature person will fall apart if they are challenged to change what has been feeding their security, no matter how distorted it is.

Organized Religion has used this concept for years - control the masses through fear.
