Standard poodles and Airedale Terriers are excellent choices - neither shed, both are very sweet regal dogs, are quite active, and are great with other dogs and kids! However, as with most non-shedding breeds, care does need to be taken with their coats - they require professional maintenance fairly often and that expense can add up! Figure about $50-75 every 4-6 weeks for grooming!
If thats not up your alley, consider any number of short haired breeds that while they shed, it isn't much. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are WONDERFUL family dogs, smart, calm indoors, very obedient with proper training and love to be active and outdoors; english pointers are another, and are only around 35-45 lbs so if size is an issue this is a good choice.
Good luck, and remember, consistency and training make the dog no matter what the breed.

For what you are describing, a short haired dog would probably be best, so there's less shedding. I am young, and I have a rottweiler. If you want a dog of her kind, just be sure you either buy it from a breeder, or obtain its family history, so you're sure that it doesn't have any temper problems. I would say that a smaller dog wouldn't be as active, however, whichever size you feel comfortable with is best. You can research information about different breeds on the internet. A good place to find a pet is the paper, a breeder, or go to petfiner.com. There, you can enter what size, breed, age, and location you'd like your dog. Be sure he's trained if you get a dog. Puppies are hard to train and chew a lot.

A Poodle is a good choice for you. A Poodle, if raised correctly, is GREAT with kids. Since you want an active dog, get either the Standard or Miniature variety. Toy Poodles are a bit nippy and might not like children. Poodles do not shed at ALL in the way a normal dog does. Their fur infact is like human hair. Good luck.

A dog that doesn't shed much and is great with kids is a Poodle, Poodle mix, or a Labrador Retriever. Here is a quiz you can take just to get an idea:

Labradors are wonderfull with kids shedding depends on the type of coat it has. I have an american bulldog shes great with my daughter and she has really short hair, bulldogs are really active and very protective too. Ill have an american bulldog for the rest of my life if that tells you anything about the breed. But really if youll take the time to groom them you can have any dog you want

I don't have kids but love my lab. He is my first and very smart, obedient and loves playing. Actually he could play all day. Mine is a brown so you don't notice the hair too much but I believe all dogs shed. Brown hair is less noticeable than golden hair. and Golden retrievers shed a lot.
