His statement to teach all nations WHATSOEVER I HAVE COMMANDED YOU?

In other words: Does the church have authority to alter Christ's admonitions and commands in the New Testament?

Good question! This is at the very heart of the debate over Peter's (and the Catholic Church's) authority on earth.

In the first quote you give, Jesus is naming Peter the earthly leader of the new Christian church ("upon this rock I will build my church" comes right before "whatever you bind") and giving him the authority to pass religious laws ("bind"). This is the passage that Catholics believe establishes Peter as the first divinely-chosen church leader or Pope.

Your question is whether the laws of men like Peter can alter or even nullify the teachings of Jesus. The obvious answer is no. God would not grant Peter an authority that could be counter to His own teachings, right?

Yet Jesus clearly gave Peter the authority to pass religious laws, so Catholics interpret that situation to mean that God will somehow ensure that Peter and those who succeed him will never err when relating Jesus' teachings while speaking as the head of the Church. Catholics call this infallibility.

Sounds unbelievable in our modern world, right? But if you believe in Jesus and believe the Bible is an accurate record, then this is the easiest way to make sense of His words.

No, if you teach it, you loose it. If you hold it back, you bind it. What's so difficult about that? And no, the church does not have authority to alter Christ's commands, or the Word of God as a whole in any way.

No, God never contradicts His basic nature. It is understood any thing is possible with God within His will and character. That's what a lot of people don't remember when they start claiming this and that. This particular scripture is directed at Peter and concerns church authority and church discipline. Here the new testament church system is being set up with the leaders and God is organizing the chain of command.

Christ has authority over all. Neither the church nor the pope has the right to change anything Christ commanded or instructed.

Matthew 28:18
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, " All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Jesus means the laws that he and Yahweh laid out is applicable in heaven, not the trivial changes that the Church adds to in order to gain favoritism... You also have to consider that the church killed the apostles to keep them from power and influence.

With this history why would he allow things that the church added to its doctrine, unsubstantiated by the Bible?

When you base your authority on imaginary beings telling people things, that authority is easily changeable.

That's why there are so many religions and sects of each religion. There's no real god anywhere to set them straight.
