It costs about £20-£30 depending on where you go. £28 at my place, or £23 if done at time of neuter.
Vets wouldn't normally scan a cat that they thought belonged to someone. Most people (I hope) would try to find out who a cat belonged to before making it their own!
Try a collar by all means, with a phone number on it - if my cat kept going missing I would try collar and microchip, that's pretty much all you can do!
Just to check - your cats are neutered right? Unneutered male cats will wander all the time, sometimes they don't come back!

I live in the united states and do not know how much it cost in the UK. In the states, it usually cost around $65 to get it done at a vet. Some animal shelters do it cheaper $40 or less. That includes the microchipping and registration.
The vets reaction would depend on the honesty of the person who brought in the cat. If the person was honest and said he found the cat then the vet could scan it. When the microchip number appears he goes on the computer and gets on the microchip database. When the vet finds out which company the chip is registered with he calls the company, gives the chip number and the company will release your information. If they are able to reach you then you and kitty will be reunited.
However, if the person who found your cat makes no mention of it being a stray and claims it as his own then the vet would have no reason to scan.

Why not call some vet clinics in your area and find out how much they charge? It's easier and faster than waiting for someone to answer you here. Also, even with the microchip, if your cat got lost and someone found him on the streets and took the cat to the vet, it's unlikely that the vet would check for a microchip unless the person tells the vet that they found the cat. However, if someone finds it and takes the cat to a shelter, then they would check for microchips so it's a good idea to get it done.

It costs between £25-30 or at least it did a few years ago when I had my cat done and as someone who has had a cat stolen, the vet will scan for a microchip and return them to the rightful owner, especially if you've reported it missing to the local vets and the microchip people.

You can expect to pay between £20 and £30 for the procedure, which can be performed by vets, local authorities and trained members of animal welfare groups.
Not sure about the answer to your 2nd question though. Maybe ask your local Vet as obviously if someone else had the cat they wouldnt know much about his or hers background and may even tell the vet it was a stray, in which case I would of thought that they would check for a chip.
Sorry I cant be of more help

i think my cats was around 20.00 - when i moved it cost 5 to update the details its relatively cheap really.
The chip contains a number, and this number is held at the microhipping company and on their database it contains your name and address and contact numbers. if a person took a cat into a vet and said they had found it then a vet should check for a chip -if there was one then it would be clear that the cat belonged to someone. It would be on that person to find out who and let them know though.
i'd definitely say get it done - a lost cat taken into a shelter would be scanned and theyd contact you.

Just had mine chipped and it cost £20! I dont know about the other question - I would ask your vet, although I am sure if someone finds a cat they would probably mention the stray aspect when the vet asks its medical history, ie where did you get it from? Am sure a vet would scan it then.

The PDSA do free microchipping for people who recieve housing benefit.
The only way a vet would scan the cat, is if the person who took him in told them he's found it.

chipping only costs about 20 quid i think and if they are found most vets will check this its fairly simple but only if the bringer in tells them its a found cat. your cat may be disappearing off for days to another house so it worthwhile to prove ownership to. and will give you peace of mind.
