could be a couple of things
first water on the knee, which is very painful
second is where your cartledge is being ripped from the knee socket joints and is now casuing pain, that's not nice either
and my favourite, but still painful, is where scare tissue builds up on the petella tendons, Kneecap, and that aslo casuses pain, only after psysio or steriod injections they tend to operate.
the one that you dont want is the Exterior or Anterior Cruciate ligament going, and they can go, stretch or slight tare, and that's realy painful.
go back to your docs and say that the resting isnt helping, as when you still walk the pain is there. They can only then send you to a sports specialist who can then do something for you
Oh, before you say, I have injured my knees as lot as I played Footie (I hate the word Soccer) and Ive had about 5 surgeries on them to help them, from the water on the knee through the a cruciate ligament rebuild
take it easy rest it, but dont rest, and I mean dont play footie, but live a normal life, and if it's still killing you after a normal day without sport you need to see the Doctor, as 2 months rest isnt really a decent thing that any doctor should say
oh and when you see the doctor again make shure that you ask to see a different one, as they havent given a proper diagnosis

This may be a case of patellafemoral syndrome, where the articulation between the knee cap and the end of the femur is not congruent. This is usually more prevalent in women due to our structural differences. Yet, it can also be caused by weakness in one particular part of the quadriceps as well as tightness of the iliotibial band on the outer part of the leg. Pain usually occurs when the quadricpes are required to be active...going up and down stairs, getting up and down from a chair, etc. It also sounds like you need further evaluation to make sure there is not any structural damage such as a torn meniscus. If it is either of the above, your next step in care should be physical therapy where more hands on examination can be done in order to attempt to correct the problem and decrease pain.

You,ve torn a cartledge. Get it repaired before it gets any worse. I put up with a torn cartledge for many years and ended up having it out. This is extremely painful and after 10 years I can hardly walk . The repair operation is done in the outpatient clinic and the results are fantastic. Get it done now

I really don't want to scare you but I was watching Diagnosis-Unknown on the TV yesterday and this young person was having pain in their knee and it ended up being cancer. I sincerely hope that is not the case with you but please go in and have a thorough exam with your doctor. A doctor had been "watching" this person but while he was watching the cancer spread to the lungs.
Just go and make sure you are okay. Incidentally this person was a soccer player too.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. Hope everything turns out to be okay.
